Theme 3: Ecological Sustainability Issues and Vulnerable Populations

Strategies for balancing coastal development with ecological sustainability.
Reconciling the needs of different users of coastal ecosystems.
The ecological footprint of the working waterfront.
Traditional and alternative energy options for coastal communities.
Strategies for potable water provision and wastewater treatment.
More effective educational strategies for coastal living.
Determination of the needs of the coastal poor and other at-risk populations.
Determination of the impacts of vulnerable populations on coastal zone environments and on the governance process.

4. Theme 4: Risk Management and Preparation

Partnering with the insurance industry in standard-setting.
Communicating coastal science to the public.
Storm water management and total maximum daily loads.
The state of coastal economics.
The effectiveness of coastal early warnings.
Effective disaster planning for vulnerable populations.
